ABOUT ME
Alana Canela has spent the past 18 years shaping the lives of children and adults through the art of dance. A proud native of North Bergen, NJ, Alana’s dance journey has been rooted in cultural responsiveness and a deep respect for diversity. Her extensive training in ballet, tap, modern, flamenco, jazz, salsa, and contemporary dance has greatly influenced both her unique movement vocabulary and her dynamic teaching approach.
Alana began teaching and choreographing at the age of 16 with her home studio, J&L Dance Center, where she developed her passion for instruction and leadership. She went on to become an instructor, choreography and Competition Director at the studio, a role she held until 2014.
In 2013, Alana co-founded the hip-hop dance company Kozmic Edge, where she helped cultivate a space that continues to provide industry-level training and performance opportunities for young dancers. After her time with Kozmic Edge, she joined New Jersey Dance Fusion in 2016 as an instructor/choreographer and mentor, where she continues to guide and inspire dancers today. Her choreography has earned numerous industry accolades and choreography awards, reflecting her creativity and impact.
Alana was a member of MDN Latin Dance Studio's professional team from 2018-2024, where she and her teammates earned multiple World Championship titles. She also gained recognition as a top-eight soloist on the world stage.
In 2023, Alana launched her own venture as the Owner and Director Canela Dance Company, where she continues to share her passion, experience, and artistry with dancers of all ages.
Alana is currently dancing and competing with the Moore Mambo Ladies under the direction of Stephany Moore and continues her training at Love for Movement Dance Studio, further expanding her artistry and technical growth.
In addition to her dance achievements, Alana holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. She taught early childhood education for ten years and worked as a Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) for three. This educational background enriches her teaching style with empathy, structure, and individualized support.
